Never Negotiate Human Rights
I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely
disappointed with the moderate…who is more devoted to order
than justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence
of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice;
who constantly says “I agree with you in the goal you seek,
but I can’t agree with your methods of direct actions”; who
paternalistically feels that he can set the timetable for another
man’s freedom; who lives by the myth of time’ and who constantly
advises us to wait until a “more convenient season.”
--Martin Luther King Jr.
In U.S. history, every time a government has discriminated against a minority group they have been proven wrong.
Our government was wrong when it tried to eradicate native Americans.
Wrong when it enslaved and segregated blacks.
Wrong when it attacked the Irish fleeing famine.
Wrong when it excluded the Chinese.
Wrong when it forbid the teaching of german.
Wrong when it attacked the Italians as elements of a catholic conspiracy.
Wrong when it banned eastern European immigrants.
Wrong when it locked up the Japanese.
Wrong when it sent refugees back into the Holocaust.
Wrong when it fought to keep Jim Crow alive.
Wrong when it treated all muslims as terrorists.
Wrong when it fought to keep gays in the closet.
It is wrong when it attacks the trans community.
Wrong when it seeks to use the cover of religion to exclude gays from public life.
Wrong when it over-polices communities of color.
Wrong when passengers on a bus to forced prove they are citizens based on nothing but the of their skin.
Wrong when it treats some people as more equal than others.
I will always fight for civil liberties, I will always fight to correct the injustices.
But I will never negotiate to give up the rights of another person.
