As an American, and most importantly as a Texan, I believe in protecting our constitutional right to bear arms.
The best way to keep our gun rights from being politicized is for Congress to make sure our gun laws are tougher, that we close down the loopholes and we prohibit sale of rapid fire weapons that could potentially be used in mass shootings. According to a recent Pew survey, 68% of Americans favor a ban on assault-style weapons, while 64% favor banning high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
The answer to responsible gun ownership doesn't need to be an erosion of the 2nd amendment but instead needs to be better gun laws. We need to fix the numerous work-arounds that exist to purchase guns from gun-shows without the proper background checks, as well as block anyone on the no-fly list from buying a gun; these stricter background checks will help to ensure innocent American lives are protected from gun violence.
